Elliptical Staircase for Westminster Hotel

Spiral UK constructed an elliptical staircase as part of major reworks to turn a London building into a prestigious hotel and accommodation block in the heart of Westminster.

The fantastic opportunity to construct an elegant elliptical staircase to connect the levels of the new hotel, at 33 Knightsbridge, in London, found itself with Spiral UK.

Signed off by Westminster City Council back in 2012, the official works on the property did not commence until March 2020. Spiral UK, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of bespoke, luxury staircases, was commissioned to take on the immense challenge of connecting the different floors of the elevated property in the heart of Westminster.

Spiral UK’s design engineers got to work straight away with planning out a structure that would perfectly fit the brief, the location and those who intended to use the staircase. As well as being tasked with the staircase, Spiral UK also crafted the balustrade, holes in the stringers to house lighting around the structure and a glass floor panelling bridge to give access to the adjacent room on the top level.

This mesmerising finished structure combined inspiring and eye-catching elements from the surrounding lighting, working the staircase comfortably around the central light beam that ran from the top to the bottom.

An exquisite design that forces you to stop and take it all in. Looking down from the top down, it’s a form of engineering art that draws you in to admire it.

The materials chosen for the structure, which included stone, stainless steel and glass, were selected due to their strong, long-lasting properties, which was important. Not only did the materials suit the finish of the property, they also were appropriate to stand the test of time both visually and practically.

These materials and finishes were crafted in light colours to illuminate the staircase structure due to it being a windowless area of the property and needing to bring in a decent light source in the absence of natural light.

The stone work was also commissioned in light colours and finishes, to tie in nicely to the luxury feel of the property and highlight its new prestige.

All in all, this was a fantastic effort from all teams. A long time in the making, but now a thriving hotel and accommodation complex for the heart of Westminster, London, worthy the time and effort dedicated to it.

Other

Stairs is sat on acoustic packers at all fixing positions to stop acoustic noise from the vibration of the piccadilly line that runs just metres from the property. As there is a train every minute it would cause the staircase to otherwise sound like a tuning fork.

Noting the finer details

At Spiral UK our design engineers are highly skilled and experienced in analysing every detail in their projects.

This project was no exception, with our team noting the neighbouring Piccadilly Tube Line that runs metres from the property, with a train passing through every minute, meaning there was a risk of the staircase succumbing to the vibrations and resulting in the structure sounding like a tuning fork.

As such, our team meticulously planned for acoustic adjustments and parameters to be put in place to mitigate this.

In addition, elements were added to the staircase such as constructing bespoke lighting arms to house ‘lightsabre’ lights that were intended to run from the upper ceiling of the property.

At Spiral UK we are dedicated to ensuring that your staircase structures are truly bespoke and unique to your wants and requirements.
