It might be stating the obvious, but the key to any successful project is good planning. If you are considering a bespoke staircase for your project then the earlier you start planning, the better. Some staircase designs are structural in nature, so cannot be simply ‘added on’ late into construction. Staircases are often one of the most complex elements of building design and construction and structurally vital, so they shouldn’t be an afterthought but a core part of the overall concept.

Helical staircases do not rely on a central pole, instead following a gently flowing curve. This kind of staircase needs to be considered alongside the wall and floor structures, and the tolerances involved to ensure that it does not create any structural movement.

Floating stairs, or cantilevered staircases, are usually fixed on one side by means of an anchoring plate set within the wall, so load-bearing capacity and structural support are important considerations when choosing this design.

Spiral staircases can be free standing, but the foundation for the foot of the stairs and the lateral restraint at the top need to be taken into account.

As detailed above, there are a number of options for staircase designs and it can be overwhelming trying to choose the right one for your project. Traditionally, an entranceway staircase would be a helical or curved design, but this may not be possible or practical for all builds. A spiral staircase can be a fantastic option for smaller spaces. Components and Materials

Once you’ve decided on the type of staircase you’d like, you can turn your attention to the smaller details which will make a big difference to the impression the staircase makes. Of course there’s the material for the staircase itself, whether metal, wood or concrete, but the other elements of the design can be created in contrasting and complementary materials and colours depending on your interior design brief and the kind of  statement you want to make.

Balustrade styles change with trends, but some timeless options are a full-height design clad in timber, or powder coated in a vibrant colour, vintage style spindle balustrades, and light-diffusing glass options.

Handrails can be formed from timber, or stainless steel with a satin polish, circular or square-edged, wrapped in materials like leather or rope…your imagination is really the only limit here!

The rise (space between steps) could be open, allowing light through and creating a sense of greater space, or closed with integrated lighting for a real modern staircase design. The treads themselves can be clad in timber, cast in concrete, inlaid with stone or set with carpet. The treads are a great way to add character and individuality to your bespoke staircase, whether it’s a splash of colour or pattern, or smaller details that elevate the design.
