Step into the Future
When planning a staircase, you might not immediately think about ‘fashion’, but it’s always worth taking into consideration where design trends are going, drawing upon new ideas and innovations as inspiration for your project.
As a leading staircase manufacturer, here at Spiral UK we have a pretty good idea of what’s at the forefront of staircase design. We work with a huge range of clients from self-builders to commercial premises, and see trends as they emerge, so here we will share with you our top predictions for staircases in 2025.
1. Floating Staircases
Floating staircases have a modern looking design which can complement minimalist homes, or add a touch of drama and contrast to a more traditional interior.
Floating stairs, or cantilevered staircases, are usually fixed on one side by means of an anchoring plate set within the wall, giving the illusion of the treads ‘floating’ as a result.
One of the advantages of a floating staircase is that it can require less space than a traditional straight or dog-leg staircase, and can easily be built with large open treads and glass panels to allow light through and prevent creating a dark corner in a smaller property.
2. Statement Treads
There are a huge number of options when it comes to the treads for your bespoke staircase, which can be combined with other design aspects in order to create a unique and impactful look. Some options include boxed or solid timber, natural stone, concrete and toughened glass, shaped and finished in a range of styles.
Coloured treads are a fantastic way to inject some drama into your staircase, whether by using coloured materials or finishes, adding a bright carpet inlay, or simply painting your own design! Some people even add patterned wallpaper to closed risers to add a pop of colour in between treads without committing to a more ‘full-on’ scheme.
Popular colours with interior designers at the moment are deep, earthy tones including forest green, terracotta and deep blue hues.
3. Integrated Lighting
As every designer knows, lighting is a vital part of creating atmosphere and warmth within a space. Your bespoke staircase is an ideal opportunity to add lighting effects in a contemporary, unusual way, creating a real focal point and helping your home to really stand out from the crowd.
Not only does LED lighting create ambience, but it can also have the added benefit of being a safety feature without compromising on style. Lights can be integrated into the risers, emitting a soft glow between treads, on the underside of the staircase to illuminate otherwise dark spaces, or behind the handrail to form a subtly lit guide at night time.
There are myriad ways that lighting can be used to enhance a staircase of any kind, and this is a design feature we expect to see continuing to grow in popularity over the coming year.
4. Two-Tone Stairs
Mixing materials and finishes is a sure-fire way to create a striking look for any staircase, and here at Spiral UK we have a wide range of options that can be mixed and matched to suit your design needs.
A classic materials combination is that of steel and glass, which strikes a contemporary note whilst being very practical and minimalist, creating a thoroughly modern staircase that doesn’t compromise on style. Wood and metal materials together form a contrasting finish which can help to harmonise different elements of an interior, whereas concrete and glass can provide clean lines and cool tones to complement a statement wall or maximalist interior.
For a more subtle take on the two-tone trend, you can mix two – or more – finishes of the same material in order to create visual interest, such as a spiral staircase made with wooden treads but finished in different tones, or a combination of brushed and stainless steel.
5. Statement Balustrades and Handrails
Balustrades are an integral part of any staircase, a functional design feature that’s vital for the safety of the user and no longer overlooked as just ‘part of the structure’, rather being appreciated as an opportunity to inject extra design elements and intrigue into bespoke staircases.
Balustrades increasingly look more and more like works of art within staircases, with features such as intricate laser cut patterns, hand crafted wooden elements, geometric metalwork and mixed materials and colours creating impressive, unique designs.
Handrails may not seem like the most exciting part of planning a staircase, but these – seemingly simply practical – elements can elevate your design further. The shape and size of the handrail, alongside the material and finish, can make a big difference to the overall look of your staircase, and can be a neat way to tie it into a broader design theme by wrapping it in a material such as leather, rope or even coloured rubber!
