Using the landscape to inspire calm, relaxing interiors

Seadrift is a new build property with stunning views overlooking the Kingsbridge estuary. Designed to take advantage of its riverside position the building is light and airy with the soft neutral tones and splashes of blue bringing the calming atmosphere of the external landscape inside.

The property is sited on the plot of an old bungalow that was in disrepair and demolished. It’s owner Steven Dooley was looking for a stylish design in keeping with the area of outstanding natural beauty in which it was resides. The project was to create his ‘forever home.’

Steven was seeking a contractor who would work closely with BBH Chartered Architects Ltd to deliver the contemporary build, in what turned out to be a challenging time, and he found it in WM Construction (SW) Ltd who managed the project through six months of continuous rain and Covid-19.

The building was constructed on strip foundations on a piled base with a concrete structure of block and beam on the ground floor. Aluminium web joists were used to the first floor and a cranked steel ridge beam was installed on the ridge of the roof, which was natural slate. The blue powder coated aluminium windows include a striking oversized slide unit by Green Circle that took full advantage of the estuary view.

The central feature on entering the property is the beautiful cantilever or floating staircase designed, manufactured and installed by Spiral UK. Cantilever staircases are very suited to contemporary interiors and this modern staircase design was no exception with classic oak treads, toughened glass balustrade and oak handrail mounted to the glass. The natural oak suited the soft tones of the coastal interior design enhancing the relaxing and refreshing atmosphere this simple uncluttered style produces.

The construction was undertaken during a particularly wet and stormy winter with the project given the extra challenge of Covid-19 at a crucial part of the development. This affected the supply of materials and labour but the team at WM Construction rose to the challenge and within 10 days of the announcement of lockdown had made the site Covid secure and their workforce were able to safely return to work. Some bespoke items did suffer lengthy delays, but the project was successfully delivered within timescales and budget.
